ROADSIDE BREAKDOWN?

The long established Car World Club is now rivalled by Auto Assist, both intent on helping you out at the roadside, or providing travel expenses, repairs, car rental or an air ticket if you are in need. Both charge an annual fee of 1,990 baht but after that the details vary and should be compared carefully. CWC is on 02 204 0666 (www.cwc.co.th) and AA is on 02 305 8501 (www.autoassist.co.th).

Driving licences in Chiangmai

The Land Transport Office on Hang Dong Road, opposite the end of the runway, has cut Saturday openings. They are now open for driving licences Monday to Friday plus the first Saturday of each month only, 8.30am to 3.30pm. Available for foreigners on Non-Immigrant visas only, you need to take a test only if you have neither an IDP nor a current licence in English language. Our advice is to take a reader of Thai to navigate you through the system, and get the required photos taken at the booths behind the main building to avoid official obfuscation.

BRITISH STYLE BUILDERS

A British construction project manager and a vastly experienced plumbing and heating engineer, Graeme Jones and Shaun Dodd, have teamed up with Khun Jack, a Thai with a bachelor degree in civil engineering, to form Euro Design and Build Company.

With many years experience between them, they are ready to provide reliable and trustworthy services on new construction, renovation and repairs. More on 01-835-0122, 06-194-3008.

NO VIETNAM VISAS

The huge TET Festival in Vietnam brought a government warning that there would be no visa approvals between January 28th and February 5th . All their offices - and most tourist attractions - are closed between those dates. There will also be a much slower service for at least 2 weeks from the 5th as staff work to catch up on the backlog.

CAPABLE PEOPLE

The well established Chiangmai Disabled Business Centre offers Thai language and computer lessons, laundry and business services (laser-printing, business cards, e-mail etc) and traditional Thai massage. The services are provided by disabled people, proving that they can develop their own opportunities.

There's a wheelchair clinic and sponsorship programme to fund free wheelchairs for needy Thai children. The chairs are built to the specific physical needs of the recipient and cost 4-9,000 baht each.

More at 133/1 Rachapakinai Road, tel 0-5321-3941, email assist@loxinfo.co.th, and www.infothai.com/disabled.
