Being Robin Hood in Chiang Mai

One thing I like about the art of archery is that you have to be strong in mind but not in body. To shoot well, you need mental strength as well as body coordination and technique. The moment you fire your arrow at the target is when your body and mind are united. It is a sport which challenges you to compete more with yourself than your opponents.

Good news for those wishing to try archery, Chiang Mai Bow in Mae Rim offers a new leisure opportunity to visitors in Chiang Mai. It is run by John Moore and his wife Daeng who are archers themselves. Thanks to its semi-outdoor design, you can either tan yourself in the sun, or choose to hide in the cooler shade of the sheltered area. Here, you can test your archery skills against your friends with a three-hour program of fun and games with the bow. The cost for your fun hours is only 700 baht, and includes being pick up and returned to your hotel or guesthouse. If you come in a large group of six or more people and book direct, then you get 20% discount. The morning round starts at 9.30 a.m. and the afternoon round is from 1.30 p.m.

Now you must have some instruction and safety guidance before they will let you shoot the arrows, but this only takes about 20 minutes.

And then after some practice to get basic techniques, it's time to jump into the game! The three-hour program includes speed shots, archer darts and a 24 arrow competition. On the first game, speed shots, you get 18 arrows, and then you have to shoot 12 arrows at the target, three arrows for three balloons and three arrows for an apple on a doll's head. The quickest archer gets his/her best time put on the statistics board. Nobody gives up? Okay! Let's move on to another game, archery darts. If you are the darts champion in your group then this time try with the bow. But don't have too much fun with the darts for you have the most challenging game ahead, the 24 arrows competition. The game is simple. You only have to shoot your 24 arrows to the target, but with a bare bow – no helping devices.
